• Ready or Not, the Candidates Are Coming
When municipal election filing began on Monday, three aspirants to the Boone Town Council converged at the Board of Elections at noon to fill out the paperwork declaring their candidacy.


• Commissioners Approve Sheriff’s Requests
The Watauga County Board of Commissioners gave Sheriff Mark Shook a favorable hearing at Monday’s regular meeting.

• Board of Adjustment Says No to Deck, Yes to Retail, Tourists
A new retail building was approved for the Shops at Shadowline, part of a deck must be dismantled and a home on Hummingbird Hill Road can be rented to tourists.

• Charting the County’s Economic Direction
At their regular meeting on Monday, the Watauga County Board of Commissioners agreed to tackle the question of the county’s economic development future at a special work session later this month.

• Chamber CD, Companion Web Site Promote Local Area
Following a full year of production, last month the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce released an interactive CD and companion Web site.

• Bird Tests Positive For West Nile Virus in Ashe
A crow tested positive for the West Nile Virus that was found in the Lansing area of the county on June 23rd, according to Public Information Officer Carol Schriber of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS).
